Historical Context

The Wedell-Williams Model 44 was one of the notable American racing aircraft of the early 1930s. Roscoe Turner's Gilmore Special appeared at the 1932 races in red Gilmore Oil Company colors with race number 121. Turner placed third in the Bendix and Shell Dash races that year, then returned in 1933 with a re-powered Model 44 to win both. His racing successes helped secure the aircraft's place among the classics of the golden age of aviation.
